Managing director of Surgical Holdings, Daniel Coole, recently spoke at the launch of the Anglia Ruskin MedTech Campus in the House of Commons.
The campus, which brings together healthcare providers and MedTech companies, supported by Anglia Ruskin University, will provide one of the world’s largest health innovation spaces. Speaking alongside the founding partners and other key stakeholders, including Professor Tony Young and Lord Howe, Daniel Coole discussed the culture change in medical device innovation that the new MedTech campus will bring about from a small MedTech business perspective: “This campus will facilitate greater interaction and support between the healthcare sector and businesses alike – increasing flow of information and ideas, and getting new innovations to market quicker. At Surgical Holdings, we are often presented with ideas for new medical devices, by surgeons or health authorities, for which we can see patient safety and cost saving benefits. However, we are not always able to get the idea to market due to barriers such as a lack of access to clinical data, cost and limited support for launching the device. “The concept of the MedTech Campus will assist with all of these factors. It will also be a launching pad for innovative ideas, so surgeons know who they can come to, if they have a new idea. The campus will also give small businesses extra credibility when they are trying to attract new export business and support the local job economy – retaining skills in Essex.”
