The biggest changes in decades, affecting the decontamination sector, will be revealed and explored at this year’s IDSc annual conference – from the latest plans for registration to a new competency framework. Patient safety, innovation and education will all be at the forefront.
The 18th Institute of Decontamination Science (IDSc) Annual conference takes place on Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th of November 2024 at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel. The IDSc conference committee together with Education and Research have been working hard on this year’s programme.
Among the hot topics to be discussed include:
- Cleaning and the Spaulding Classification: A proposed cleaning classification system for reusable medical devices to complement the Spaulding classification, will be discussed by Dr. Gerald McDonnell Vice President, Microbiological Quality & Sterility Assurance Johnson & Johnson
- Instructions for use - IFUs: A review of the current challenges facing Decontamination Units. Examples from the membership of 'hard to clean' devices will be highlighted; presented by Stuart White, Decontamination Lead for ESNEFT.
- Biofilms and Flexible Endoscopes: Current gaps in testing for flexible endoscope decontamination, the inadequacy of sampling and test methods for biofilm, the risk of biofilm accumulation in flexible endoscopes and what can or should we do to prevent this. These challenges will be discussed by Rob Warburton Group Decontamination Lead, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.
These are just some of the hot topics being explored by top experts at IDSc.

All healthcare professionals that have day-to-day operational responsibilities for medical device decontamination are encouraged to attend the annual conference and exhibition. This includes Infection Prevention and Control, Endoscopy, Dental, Nursing and anyone that is involved in decontamination of medical devices.
Together, the conference and exhibition will help delegates understand how the latest industry changes will affect them, how they can improve safety for patients, and how innovation could transform the decontamination sector.
Attending IDSc 2024 also contributes towards Continual Professional Development (CPD) and will help individuals evidence that they are updating their knowledge. Ultimately, this will enable departments to deliver a high quality, professional and safe service, which will benefit patients and healthcare providers alike.
