Disappointment over HAI progress

Responding to the latest figures on incidents of healthcare-associated infection in NHS Trusts, the Healthcare Commission chief executive, AnnaWalker, said: “It’s good to see that MRSA infections rates appear to be levelling out.

However, it’s disappointing that Trusts have not been able to make more progress, more quickly on reaching the target for 2008. Although the rates of C.difficile are now rising less quickly, this increase will still cause concern to patients.

“The Government’s Hygiene Code should provide a fresh opportunity for all Trusts to review the standards they have in place. The process for the implementation has begun and Trusts have welcomed this development. From now on Trusts will have to provide assurance that they are working to the standards of this code. We will be monitoring their progress and where necessary, we will take action to ensure that improvements are made.

“Each Trust’s initial compliance with standards for infection control will be reflected in the 06/07 annual health check, the rating of their performance that will published later this year.”
