Research from specialist recruiter Randstad Care indicates that over one-fifth of nurses worry about losing their job.
The study of over 2,000 British employees found that 23% of those surveyed said they felt insecure about their jobs.
Over the last five years there has been a steady increase in job insecurity among nurses. In 2007, 17% of nurses felt insecure, a figure which rose to 19% in 2009, and then rose again in 2014 to 21% of the workforce – suggesting that nurses are increasingly worried about the threat of job cuts as part of Government austerity measures.
However, nurses are not as worried about losing their jobs as social workers and other public sector professionals. Nurses reported lower levels of job insecurity than social care workers and those employed in general government administration roles such as defence, which are expected to experience a 30%-40% reduction in their workforce over the next five years.
