Nigel Scott, a colorectal surgeon at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust, took up the role of president of the Association of Coloproctology (ACP) from 23 June. Mr Scott trained as a surgeon in the UK and at the Mayo Clinic in the USA.
He has worked in the NHS for 32 years – 19 as a consultant colorectal surgeon. As well as being chair of the ACP Education Committee responsible for the first Colorectal Syllabus, he was ACP Honorary Secretary from 2005 to 2008. During his presidency Mr Scott says that he is hoping to focus on improving outcomes after bowel cancer surgery, using the National Bowel Cancer Audit Project (NBOCAP); progressing improvements in the multi-professional care of patients with Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis; promoting awareness and access for bowel control; and advancing GMC recognition of specialised colorectal surgeons.
