Advanced radiation treatment

The world’s first linear accelerator with integrated 3D imaging – Synergy from ELEKTA – has been delivered to the Royal Marsden cancer hospital in Sutton.

Synergy is the first advanced radiation therapy treatment platform that will allow clinicians to both image and treat patients at the same location, at the time of treatment. The result is unmatched clinical confidence, due to an ability to precisely locate the tumour immediately prior to commencing treatment with Elekta 4D Adaptive IGRT. This enables more aggressive treatment of tumours while minimising damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

Using Synergy 3D VolumeView mode, clinicians can visualise soft tissue detail in any area of the body. This unique functionality offers improved patient outcomes due to the ability to minimise side-effects of radiation therapy together with the potential to adopt dose escalation and hypofractionation regimes (fewer, more aggressive treatments per patient) with the confidence that a 3D plan will be delivered as an accurately targeted 3D treatment. This offers the potential to improve treatment outcomes and reduce treatment waiting lists.

In addition to the Synergy systems, Beam Modulator upgrades will offer fully integrated high-resolution beam shaping on the existing linear accelerators.
