Wound closure device saves time

Patients across the UK are set to benefit from a major breakthrough in wound closure technology which will cut theatre time and reduce the risk of infection. B. BRAUN MEDICAL has secured sole distribution rights to the UK market for Quill SRS, a barbed, knotless wound closure device.

Quill SRS has made major inroads in the North American market and scooped the Medical Design Excellence Award 2010. The Quill is a barbed suture which does not require knotting. This means all the stress is spread evenly across the suture rather than at the knot, creating an air tight wound, reducing the chance that the wound will re-open during or following surgery. Mark Culf at B. Braun Medical said: “We believe this will provide major benefits for surgeons and their patients, particularly in the fields of gynaecological, orthopaedic, cosmetic and general surgery. Because the surgeon does not need to knot, this greatly reduces suturing time – in some cases up to 40% – and, in turn, reduces the length of time the patient is under anaesthetic.”
