In the wake of Lansley’s zero tolerance on healthcare associated infections, GOJO demonstrated elements of its continuously improving hand hygiene education programme at this year’s IPS conference to aid infection control nurses.
Gold sponsor GOJO also supported a speaker slot on “Exploring New Developments in Hand Hygiene” presented by Professor John Boyce, from Saint Raphael Hospital, Connecticut, US.
The session explored approaches to hand hygiene education and motivation for healthcare workers, in addition to innovative approaches to monitoring hand hygiene compliance. As pioneers in hand hygiene education, GOJO has an established team whose sole focus is on-going support to hospitals across the UK to achieve best hand hygiene practice and address compliance issues.
The GOJO team meets face to face with infection control nurses in hospitals to offer advice and training on specific hand hygiene requirements to help tackle hand transmitted infection. This includes help to implement protocols for maintaining healthy skin and guidance on engaging and motivating other members of staff to fully adhere to good hand hygiene practice.
Mike Sullivan, managing director of GOJO Industries Europe Ltd, said: “Our education programme is dedicated to controlling the spread of infection by hands in hospitals, while keeping skin healthy to encourage compliance. As originators of the concept we know this is best achieved through forming close working relationships with infection control nurses by adopting a ‘day in the life’ approach at different hospitals to offer a bespoke solution.
“This allows us to get to the bottom of any compliance issues faced to help instil a behaviour change and ensure correct hand hygiene programmes are being implemented. In our experience problems, with compliance relate directly to time restrictions, skin irritability, lack of facilities, sparse education or lack of awareness and motivation.”
GOJO Industries has over 60 years leadership improving hand hygiene in all healthcare settings. The product portfolio – including Purell – is formulated using the latest skin science to tackle infection control while preventing irritation of the skin.
