RCM plea for pension protection

The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) has welcomed the Turner report into pension reform and is calling on the Government to stand by its promise to protect midwives and other healthcare workers when it considers its response.

“Increasing strain on NHS pensions could exacerbate the current staffing crisis in UK maternity wards,” Dame Karlene Davis of the RCM commented. “Pensions are an important aspect of retaining midwives who already face tough conditions, including unsociable hours, strenuous workloads and a very responsible job. It is important that the Government recognises this and supports midwives and the industry.

“Rising demographics and changing society have placed huge importance on necessity for reform. We welcome the opportunity the report offers to engage in positive debate and look forward to working closely with the Government towards securing a brighter future for our members.”
