Surgeons, scientists and production experts at B.BRAUN MEDICAL have worked together to develop Sangustop to keep surgical sites free from blood. The high density pads are seen as an advance in surgical care during major operations – especially liver, neurological and gynaecological surgery.
The haemostat is easier to use, as surgical teams can use both sides, while there is no need to moisten the pads before applying or to maintain pressure for several minutes to stop the bleeding. In addition, Sangustop does not contain any component of human origin, reducing the likelihood of certain infections, and does not crumble. The new product is particularly suitable for severe haemorrhages. Tests have shown the water uptake capacity of Sangustop is more than four times higher, and the wetting speed more than two times faster, than collagen containing human additives. Mark Culf, national sales manager at B.Braun Medical, said: “We see Sangustop having a vital role in major liver centres across the country but it will also present a major advance in care during any surgical procedure where there is severe bleeding.”
