MRSA rates decrease

The Health Protection Agency has published its latest quarterly report on MRSA bloodstream infections. The latest figures from the Agency’s mandatory surveillance of MRSA bloodstream infections show that there were 836 cases reported in England during the April to June quarter of 2008. This represents a 14% decrease on the previous quarter (January to March 2008) when 969 reports were received and a 36% reduction in the corresponding quarter of 2007 (April to June) when 1,306 reports were received.

Anna Walker, the Healthcare Commission’s chief executive, said: “It is important to remember that our work still shows variations in the performance of Trusts. There are some Trusts that don’t have all the necessary systems in place to fight outbreaks if they do occur and some are falling far short of targets to reduce rates of MRSA. Our message to those Trusts is that reductions can be achieved and you must strengthen your approach. We are continuing our inspections of each and every hospital Trust this year to check Trusts are taking the necessary measures.”
