Nuffield Health Parkside Hospital treats its first patients with da Vinci Xi surgical system

Nuffield Health Parkside Hospital, in Wimbledon, London, has treated its first four patients with the da Vinci Xi surgical system, a leading robotic-assisted surgical system that enables consultant surgeons to perform with greater precision, with patients likely to experience less pain and faster recoveries after the robot-assisted surgery.

More than 12 million procedures have been performed with Da Vinci surgical systems on patients worldwide, and there are more than 34,000 independent studies that suggest robotic-assisted surgery with a da Vinci Surgical System can offer patients demonstrated benefits compared with open surgery. These can include reduced blood loss; reduced risk of infection; fewer complications; reduced length of stay, and reduced chance of readmission to hospital.

“The Parkside team are delighted to have treated our first four patients with our new da Vinci Xi Surgical System,” commented Kate Farrow, Health Systems Director at Nuffield Health Parkside Hospital. “All four patients, who had prostatectomy surgeries, are recovering well, and we are excited to launch our Pelvic Robotic programme here at the hospital. Our new da Vinci Xi Surgical System will help us to increase capacity, which is great news for our patients, consultant surgeons and to referrers from across London and the South. We are proud to be the first Nuffield Health hospital to have the da Vinci Xi Surgical System available and we are looking forward to providing best-in-class outcomes for more people undergoing prostate, kidney, and in time gynaecological and colorectal cancer surgeries,” added Kate.

The da Vinci Xi Surgical System works by giving consultant surgeons an advanced set of instruments to use in performing robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery. It enables the consultant surgeon to view a patient’s anatomy using a highly magnified, 3D high-definition view of the surgical area and magnifies 10 times to what the human eye sees. This provides the consultant surgeon with a crystal-clear view when operating on delicate tissues and organs. This is also displayed to the entire operating theatre using the vision cart.

The consultant surgeon controls the da Vinci Xi Surgical System through the surgeon console. During a procedure, the da Vinci Xi Surgical System translates the surgeon’s hand movements in real time, bending and rotating the instruments while performing the procedure. The da Vinci Xi Surgical System’s instruments are designed with full-wristed dexterity to enable advanced surgical precision with the tiny instruments moving like a human hand, but with a greater range of motion so fewer incisions are needed in surgeries.

Mr Hasan Qazi, Consultant Urology Surgeon, at Nuffield Health Parkside Hospital, explained: “The da Vinci Xi Surgical System at Nuffield Health Parkside Hospital transforms the way we perform complex surgeries such as prostatectomy, hysterectomy and colorectal cancer surgery. The robotic-assisted system makes it easier to be precise, protecting healthy tissue and enabling faster recovery for my patients. Clinical evidence across the world shows positive outcomes for patients because of the huge advantages the system offers.”

The da Vinci Xi Surgical System at Nuffield Health Parkside Hospital is the first installed at one of the healthcare charity’s 37 hospitals across the UK. It’s available to patients alongside the Mako robotic-arm surgical system as part of Nuffield Health Parkside Hospital’s commitment to investing in new technologies to support best-in-class outcomes for patients.

Nuffield Health Parkside Hospital also specialises in orthopaedic, cancer, urology, gynaecology and women’s health care and diagnostics. The hospital is part of the wider Nuffield Health healthcare charity, with a network of connected hospitals, fitness and wellbeing centres, healthcare clinics, and workplace wellbeing services across the UK.
