South Tees combats CAUTIs

South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust has decided to introduce the Bardex I.C. silver alloy and hydrogel coated Foley catheter, from BARD, as a first line treatment option to help reduce healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).

The catheter is proven to reduce catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) by over a third, due to the combination of slow release silver ions and hydrogel coating, which reduces the ability of bacteria to bond to the surface.

Head of infection prevention and control at the Trust, Alison Peevor said: “Initial funding has been provided by the DH as part of an overall project looking at proven and new developments to reduce HAIs. Although it is early days, we have already seen a reduction in urinary catheter related infections. The silver alloy and hydrogel coated Foley catheter has received a Level One recommendation – the highest level – by the Department of Health’s Rapid Review Panel.
