Single-shot disinfectants for endoscopes

The decontamination of flexible endoscopes has progressed through many different stages and seen significant improvements since South African born physician Basil Hirschowitz developed the first device in 1957.

SCHULKE & MAYR UK points out that a recent change has been from multi-use disinfectants, which are difficult to control, to the more favoured single shot disinfectants.

Following this trend of evolution two new single shot products Gigasept Once and Thermosept PAA have been designed. Both use a peracetic acid based formula that results in excellent material compatibility and therefore much lower associated health and safety risks. Both products have a short contact time of five minutes for TB, sp ores and viruses. Both products fulfil the criteria for cleaning and disinfection to standard prEN ISO 15883-4 and CEN ISO/TS 15883-5 respectively. Therefore presuming that the programming, dosage and manufacturer’s instructions are adhered to, then a safe reprocessing of used flexible endoscopes can be expected during routine use.

Gigasept Once is recommended for BHT and PFE machines whereas Thermosept PAA is recommended for Wassenburg Machines.
