Trusts failing to meet DVT guidelines

The All-Party parliamentary thrombosis group has found that around two-thirds of Trusts are failing to follow Government guidelines on DVT, which could have resulted in 11,000 unnecessary patient deaths.

The Government announced in April that all hospital patients in England should be assessed for risk of DVT. But the MP’s report estimates that the number of preventable deaths, since this announcement, may be three times as high as those from HAIs.

Up to 10% of all hospital deaths may be attributable to blood clot complications, yet investment in infection control measures is expected to be fives times higher than on DVT prevention. The group is calling on the Government to make the guidelines mandatory.
