Urgently addressing TBI and stroke issues

Measures to prevent strokes, limitation of brain damage in trauma and stroke, and prospects for enhancing recovery after traumatic brain injury (TBI), will be issues addressed at a two-day conference in London.

“Strategies for traumatic brain injury and stroke – progress and prospects” is the theme of the event which is being staged by BIAS – the Acute Brain Injury and Stroke Group, South East Health Technologies Alliance, on 5 and 6 December at the British Medical Association.

BIAS points out that, in the EU this year, 1.1 million people will experience a stroke and that affected will be 5% of the population aged over 75 and 10% of the population over 80. Furthermore, 750,000 people in the EU will be treated this year for the consequences of traumatic brain injury which is the leading cause of disability in those aged under 25.

Despite considerable efforts by scientists, there are currently no recognised treatments for TBI and stroke that will make a significantly positive impact on outcomes for the large numbers of people affected.

At the conference, experts from a wide range of disciplines will examine where research should be focused now to deal with what is increasingly recognised as a “silent epidemic”.
