Research reveals expanded nursing roles

Nurses are taking on complex and advanced roles, co-ordinating packages of care and developing and modernising services, according to research by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and Department of Health. The survey looked at nurses working in new and extended roles and highlighted how they were developing their jobs to provide innovative new services and better patient care.

The survey shows how nurses carrying out these expanded roles have contributed positively to delivery of better patient care, by providing expert knowledge and advice, and travelling with the patient from the beginning to the end of their health care journey. Nurses in expanded roles clearly see themselves as maxi nurses, not mini doctors.

General secretary of the RCN, Beverly Malone said: “These nurses are at the leading edge of transforming how health services are delivered and their nursing skills, knowledge and experience is central to achieving this. Growing and nurturing these roles is critical to the continued development of patient centred health services.

“This is an important survey which shows how nurses really are developing new roles and ways of working to deliver patient-centred care. The nurses featured are an inspiration and are passionate about what they do.”
