New initiative to improve patient safety

A new research partnership which aims to improve patient safety has been launched.

The University of Aberdeen in collaboration with the Universities of Dundee and St Andrews has announced the “Scottish Patient Safety Research Network”, which will study the causes of “adverse events” – such as patients mistakenly being given the wrong drugs. An estimated 85,000 adverse events occur each year in Scotland with costs to the country estimated at £200 million. Approximately 50% of them are preventable. The network will be working in association with the Scottish Patient Safety Alliance.
