Strategies to reduce surgical site infection

Surgical teams continue to face challenges in the fight to reduce SSIs. The annual conference on Quality Improvement for Surgical Teams recently discussed the risks and latest strategies for prevention.

Quality Improvement for Surgical Teams (QIST) provided an opportunity for orthopaedic surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, managers, commissioners, pharmacists and allied health professionals to share best practice at a two-day conference hosted by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. High on the agenda was discussion of the wide variety of strategies aimed at reducing risk of surgical site infection (SSI) in orthopaedic surgery.

Topical presentations at QIST covered an insight into a new perioperative assessment tool designed to support best practice in infection prevention to decrease the risk of SSI (developed through the OneTogether project); discussion of the risk factors for the development of deep infection following hip fracture surgery, as well as the latest evidence for infection prevention strategies.
