Decontamination of reusable medical devices

PAUL JENKINS from the North Bristol NHS Trust provides an update of current issues and challenges relating to the decontamination of reusable medical devices.

Pressures on decontamination departments have never been greater. There is a fundamental need to keep patients (and staff) safe while continually delivering savings and cost efficiencies. Standards for the decontamination of medical devices have risen significantly over recent years and there is continued awareness of the potential for the transmission of prion diseases. Then there are ever-evolving factors to consider like tracking and traceability, staff training, choice of wraps, detergent selection and last but not least the question of where the decontamination process should begin.

It is recognised that ‘a safe decontamination service contributes to successful clinical outcomes and the wellbeing of both patients and staff’ and ‘the management and decontamination of surgical instruments are key components in the delivery of safe interventional care.’ (CFPP01-01 A) Healthcare providers in England are required by law to comply with essential levels of safety and quality which are assessed by the CQC. The Health and Social Care Act 2008 (updated 2015) recommends that effective prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections should be embedded in everyday practice.

The Department of Health Choice Framework for local Policy and Procedures (CFPP01-01) offers best practice guidance on the management and decontamination of surgical instruments used in acute care. The guidance aims to assist providers in preventing and controlling the risk of transmission of infection through surgical instruments, with specific reference to the theoretical transmission risk of human prion diseases. Adherence to the CFPP guidance also helps in meeting CQC requirements on hygiene and infection control.
