Louise Frampton recently visited the headquarters of Unisurge to gain an insight into the growing market for custom procedure packs and current strategies for delivering cost savings to hospitals across the UK.
UK Trusts are increasingly moving to custom procedure packs as part of efforts to improve efficiency, save time, improve infection control and reduce costs. In some cases, healthcare organisations have reported savings in the region of £180,000 on annual theatre spend. (Source: NHS Supply Chain.) By reducing the time involved in locating products required for a procedure, the time savings accrued can lead to additional procedures being performed. NHS Supply Chain points out that errors are reduced and there are labour savings, as the items required are contained in one pack, instead of having to be retrieved individually; waste is also reduced as there is just one pack per procedure.
The benefits of procedure packs are increasingly being recognised, but delivering savings for a financially constrained NHS needs to be achieved without compromising on quality, argues Phil Crook, director of sales, Unisurge International. Founded in 1988, the company has quickly grown to becoming one of the largest procedure pack suppliers in Europe and was recently identified as one of London Stock Exchange’s ‘1000 Companies to Inspire Britain’. A core principle supporting its rapid growth has been a commitment to product innovation.
