KARL STORZ hosts a number of training courses and conferences each year – including the SMART series of conferences (Saving Money and Resources in Theatres). One of the central questions discussed was: how can we do ‘more for less’? More importantly, how can this be achieved safely? LOUISE FRAMPTON reports.
NHS England Chief Executive, Simon Stevens, has previously commented: “To sustain a comprehensive high quality NHS, action will be needed on three fronts: demand, efficiency and funding.” He has identified three widening gaps in terms of: health and wellbeing; care and quality; and funding and efficiency. Moreover, he believes that these gaps are ‘not inevitable’; a better future can be achieved “with the right changes, the right partnerships, and right investment”.
“The current climate is all about doing more for less,” commented Mike Perks, managing director, Karl Storz Endoscopy UK, at the ‘Saving Money And Resources in Theatres’ (SMART) conference. He pointed out that a significant number of Trusts are in deficit and this period of financial pressure is set to continue – there will be a rationalisation of services, and further upheaval and restructuring. So how can we think SMART?
