DR SCOTT BROWN discusses how the reduction of waste can be eliminated from the healthcare setting through effective strategies for medical device utilisation.
The concept of ‘lean’ is the reduction of waste or ‘MUDA’ – a concept that was originally developed for the manufacturing industry. DR SCOTT BROWN PHD CENG CSCI MIPEM discusses how MUDA can be eliminated from the healthcare setting through effective strategies for medical device utilisation.
I was heartened to read two reports published earlier this year – the first by Lord Carter of Coles’ Review of Operational Productivity in NHS providers and an offering from the Medical Technology Group (MTG), Innovation, health and wealth – A Scorecard. These reports show there is a real drive within the NHS towards improving efficiency. In his foreword, Lord Carter of Coles identifies: “The greatest challenge we face is to lift hospital efficiency to a consistently high standard in every area of every NHS hospital…” (2015, p.2).
His report goes on to mention estates and procurement but falls short of including all medical devices and restricts the findings to high value devices only focusing on single-use hip prosthesis. This may be the result of a limitation in the scope or granularity of the research and is potentially a missed opportunity.
