Bucking the outsourcing trend

An insight into a new, state-of-the-art sterile services facility, established at Benenden Hospital, which is bucking the trend for outsourcing of services.

SUZANNE CALLANDER reports on the recent opening of a new, state-of-the-art sterile services department at Benenden Hospital which is bucking the trend for outsourcing of services.

Many hospital sterilisation facilities struggle to meet the stringent standards set by the Department of Health for the reprocessing of surgical instruments, which has led many to consider outsourcing this service.

An ageing air conditioning system in the original unit eventually failed to meet the demanding standards set by the Trust which resulted in a need to segregate the autoclave from the pack room. This solution, although not ideal, worked well for a number of years and kept the department running effectively.
