Advancing research to improve survival

The National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) Cancer Conference recently took place at the BT Convention Centre in Liverpool, showcasing the latest basic, translational and clinical cancer research – from therapeutic and diagnostic advances, to new findings on risk factors.

Cancer incidence rates in Great Britain have risen by 23% in males and by 43% in females since the mid-1970s, while more than 1-in-3 people will develop some form of cancer during their lifetime in the UK (according to Cancer Research UK figures). Due to significant advances in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, cancer death rates in the UK have fallen by around one-fifth over the last 40 years.

Early diagnosis is a vital part of improving survival, however. The latest research suggests that there is more work to be done to raise awareness within certain sectors of the population and to ensure cancers are identified at the earliest possible stage.
