The Clinical Services Journal reports on the first four Future Hospital Development sites and finds out how they are working towards the goal of bringing specialist medical care closer to the patient.
As a follow up to the findings of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) Future Hospital Report, which was published in September 2013, the RCP is now partnering with four NHS Trusts across England and Wales who will act as Future Hospital Development Sites. This is the first phase of the Future Hospital Programme which aims to put into action the RCP’s vision to improve the care of medical patients by bringing medical specialist care closer to the patient, wherever they are – in hospital or in the community.
The four sites, chosen from 20 Trusts who applied to become a development site, will now partner with the RCP to implement and evaluate the Future Hospital in practice.
Three of the projects aim specifically at improving the care of frail older patients, while the fourth aims to streamline the care of patients admitted via acute medical admissions services, including frail older patients, by amalgamating several assessment and admission pathways on a single emergency floor of the hospital.
