Learning from high reliability organisations

Dr DAN COHEN believes that healthcare has much to learn from industries that are inherently dangerous, yet have achieved standards of high reliability performance that have resulted in dramatic improvements in safety, for customers and for staff.

The healthcare industry is defined by continuous change – some for the better, some for the worse. While emerging technologies provide promise for advancing diagnostic and therapeutic options, the increasing number and complexity of healthcare interventions also raises the risk of active or latent system failures that could harm patients and staff.

There is much that can be learned from other industries and healthcare leaders need to apply the lessons learned by High Reliability Organisations (HROs) to their own constantly changing, highrisk environment.
