It only takes a quick search under ‘Breast Cancer’ on the NHS website or a quick look at any of the main cancer charity sites to reinforce why LIMBS & THINGS have released a new Breast Examination Trainer.
With early diagnosis making a significant difference to treatment outcomes, it is essential for medical professionals to acquire competency in clinical breast examination and for patients to be able to learn breast self examination skills. The need for realistic and reliable simulators is clear and Limbs & Things’ latest product addresses this need. Extensive consultation with existing simulator users and close collaboration with Mr Peter Donnelly of Torbay Hospital has culminated in the recent launch of the new Breast Examination Trainer.
Created using realistic, latex-free soft tissue, the Limbs & Things Breast Examination Trainer is a left and right breast model with optional clavicular and axilla pads for lymph node placement. The model is supplied with six different types of pathologies which can be placed in a variety of predetermined locations, offering students further challenges and surprises in their training.
It can be used with a plastic torso as a bench top teaching aid, or worn by a simulated patient (SP) during student assessment. The value of using SPs for breast examination, a potentially sensitive situation, is clear – allowing students to practise and improve their clinical and conversational skills before an actual patient encounter and to receive feedback from the SP on their technique and professional conduct. Advanced, standard and basic options are available to cater for a range of budgets.
