Surgeons at Birmingham Children’s Hospital have carried out over 1,000 operations in their new state-of-the art laparoscopic theatre, the first of its kind in Birmingham.
Since the laparoscopic theatre opened in March 2012, 1,124 procedures have been carried out. This represents 6.17% of all of the theatre activity at the hospital. The £2 m fully integrated laparoscopic theatre, the OR1 NEO from KARL STORZ, offers consultants and patients the latest in digital surgical technology. It also provides a safer and more comfortable working environment for all staff. Features of the ergonomically-designed operating theatre include adjustable touch screen capability, instant access to images, high definition pictures and video capture – which can be played back to the patient post-operatively to help explain the procedure. Mr Girish Jawaheer, the consultant paediatric surgeon who led the theatre build project, said: “We are delighted with the new theatre which enables me and my colleagues to work in an environment which is fit for purpose. The lighting, pressure flows and positioning of the operating table and HD screens is preset specifically for each surgeon, giving greater comfort for the surgeon – improving accuracy and performance.”
