Cataract surgery reduces the risk of hip fracture

Cataract surgery may reduce the risk of accidents and injuries such as hip fracture, according to a new study undertaken in the US which found that older people who underwent surgery to improve their vision were less likely to suffer a hip fracture over the following 12-month period.

The study involved more than 1 million people suffering from cataracts, 37% of whom had eye surgery between 2002 and 2009. Based on US government records, the researchers found that people who underwent surgery to improve their eyesight had a 16% lower chance of fracturing a hip and a 5% lower risk of all fractures, compared to those who opted against surgery.
