SYNERGY HEALTH has welcomed the National Audit Office report highlighting that NHS hospitals are wasting an estimated £500 million per year on basic supplies.
The study of 165 NHS acute and foundation Trusts showed that at least 10% of spending on consumables was unnecessary. One of the biggest wastes identified was on like-for-like products, with an estimated £150 million, averaging £900,000 per Trust, being wasted in this way. Malcolm Sayers, business development manager for Synergy Health said: “Hospitals could save millions of pounds simply by switching their prescribing habits from expensive brand names to equivalent lesser known products, and by ensuring that they adhere to procurement guidelines. “As an example, millions of pounds of tubular bandages are dispensed each year, but if prescribers switched from the brand leader to equivalent products, such as Synergy’s Comfifast, savings of up to 40% could be achieved.” Synergy Health supplies the Comfifast range of tubular bandages, including the multistretch product, which meet dressing retention and wet and dry wrapping requirements.
