The SafeSet IV system, developed by B. BRAUN MEDICAL, is a new intravenous (IV) system that can reduce the risk of blood clots. Designed to work effectively for 72 hours without air entering the line it can save nurses, on average, 25 minutes a day.
An airtight filter membrane – AirStop – acts as a barrier preventing air entering and helping to maintain a constant fluid level. A protective cap, lined with a special membrane, stops fluid leaking and protects against contamination, reducing infection rates. An increasing number of hospitals across the UK are using the SafeSet system, which ties in to the NHS Releasing Time to Care: Productive Ward initiative, which focuses on improving ward processes and environments to help nurses and therapists spend more time on patient care. Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust are using the system. Janet Page, clinical skills facilitator at Hull Royal Infirmary, said: “The features of the SafeSet IV system specifically prevent air infusion, help to maintain a constant fluid level and protect against leakage and contamination. The inbuilt air inlet also removes the need for a separate device and therefore reduces the risk of needle stick injuries. “All of these features have made the use of this system both time and cost effective for our Trust.”
