A major consolidation programme which, it is claimed, will deliver huge savings to the NHS has almost been completed by NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) Details of the three year programme have been set out in a report presented to the NHSBT Board.
The programme included laboratory decommissioning and consolidation of activities, refurbishment of facilities and the introduction of new working practices to support changes in the supply chain. Commenting on the report NHSBT chief executive, Lynda Hamlyn, said: “Delivery of this consolidation programme has been a major achievement and has been key to lowering costs and reducing the price of blood. This £16 million, together with other NHSBT change programmes, have resulted in a saving of nearly £30 m to the NHS that can be passed on to frontline patient services. We have achieved this while maintaining supply, safety and high regulatory standards.”
