As part of a new video case study series from HORIBA Medical, Lynda Petley, manager, point-of-care testing team, Partnership Pathology Services, Frimley Park Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, explains how point-of-care (POC) haematology and clinical chemistry testing has become an extension of the Trusts’ central laboratory’s services.
Frimley Park Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is reportedly one of the UK hospital Trusts leading the way in POC. Eight compact ABX Pentra 60 C+ haematology analysers with remote monitoring and bidirectional access through the Pentra SAfe solution from HORIBA Medical are being used by the Trust’s dedicated POC team in various locations, including A&E, oncology clinics, and a healthcare centre.
In the video, Mr S Premachandran, clinical director, Emergency Medicine, at Frimley Park Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, explains how the new point-of-care testing (POCT) services are benefiting both patients and staff, with faster turnaround of results, shorter waiting times for patients, cost-effective, lean working practices for clinicians, and fewer admissions. “It will give you results straight away in front of the patient, and you cannot expect anything better than that,” he explains. “By doing this at the patient bedside, we are reducing unnecessary admissions”.
Lynda Petley explains how, with the new Pentra SAfe solution, laboratory workers have instant access to real-time analysis at point-of-care. “Thanks to the Pentra SAfe solution,” she says, “we realised we were also able to password protect the analysers, thus ensuring that the people using them were trained by us, that their competency had been assessed, and that the results they were getting were of a laboratory standard.”
