The British Association of Day Surgery and Healthcare Events are jointly hosting a conference entitled: The Future of day surgery: delivering improvements in quality and productivity, taking place Wednesday 1 December 2010 at the Manchester Conference Centre.
Dr Ian Smith, president of the British Association of Day Surgery will open the conference with a presentation on delivering improvements in quality and productivity, accelerating the development of best practice tariffs and the future of day surgery.
Dr Mark Skues, director of day surgery, Countess of Chester NHS Foundation Trust, and president elect at the British Association of Day Surgery, will deliver a presentation entitled: “Improving efficiency: reconfiguring day surgery” and will discuss the key quality indicators. He will look at moving from process to outcome indicators, and benchmarking for improvement across organisations.
Dr Doug McWhinnie, consultant surgeon, Milton Keynes General Hospital NHS Trust, and immediate past president of the British Association of Day Surgery, will discuss redesigning the care pathway in response to financial incentives, and reducing variation between organisations.
The conference will also feature a debate on whether staggered admission times should be introduced for all day case patients. Dr Bill Horton, clinical director, day case surgical unit, Aintree University Hospitals NHS Trust, will put the case “for”, while the case “against” will be argued by Dr Gerry McCarthy, Northern Ireland lead clinician for day surgical reform, and consultant anaesthetist and lead for pre-assessment, Belfast City Hospital. The debate will be followed by an audience vote.
The afternoon continues with case study sessions, focusing on improving day case surgery, and will discuss breast day case surgery, hernia repair and gynaecology.
Delegates will have the opportunity to raise questions and issues they are facing, in an extended panel discussion with speakers from the day. For more information please call Stephen Bennett on 020 8541 1399, email stephen@healthcare-events.co.uk or visit http://www.healthcare-events.co.uk
