Novel detergent reduces endoscopy manual cleaning time and water usage

A new study conducted at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, part of Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, found that adopting EndoPreZyme could help save 725,000 litres of water annually and reduce average manual cleaning time by 15%.

The study,1 conducted in the endoscopy decontamination unit, compared the manual cleaning process using the hospital’s standard detergent to a process that utilised Olympus’ EndoPreZyme. It evaluated the time taken for manual cleaning, water usage, cost implications and technician experience.

EndoPreZyme is a detergent used during the manual cleaning of flexible endoscopes. It enables hospitals to eliminate the final rinse step after manual cleaning, when these flexible endoscopes are subsequently reprocessed in a validated Endoscope Washer Disinfector (EWD), such as the ETD Double.2,3

The study found that almost 2 minutes were saved per endoscope, amounting to 963 technician hours saved annually, delivering 17% additional capacity with existing resources – with an overall reduction in cost.1
