Trends in point-of-care ultrasound

SIMON ELLIOTT, consultant radiologist at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne and an early advocate of the benefits of point-of-care ultrasound, shares his experiences and reflects on how the use of ultrasound is changing.

What are the key trends in the field of ultrasound in your opinion at the present?

One of the biggest trends is that more than half of ultrasound scans are now not carried out within radiology, and this trend is worldwide.1 We have already seen this occur in obstetrics, echocardiography, musculoskeletal scans, and now across other point-of-care locations, such as intensive care and for regional anaesthesia, where ultrasound examinations are being performed by clinical specialists and not radiologists.

With more ultrasound scanning being performed outside of radiology, are you decreasing numbers of radiology staff?
