Portakabin delivers endoscopy suite to Rugby

Portakabin has delivered an endoscopy suite to provide better access to vital diagnostic procedures to the Rugby community.

Part of a £34 million package by the NHS nationally to speed up diagnosis, the unit will treat up to 50 patients a day and provide care for patients in a higher capacity, state-of-the-art facility.

Portakabin, an expert in modular construction, was appointed as a design and build contractor by University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust to construct an HTM and HBN compliant building to an ambitious timeline.

The two-storey facility was built using modern methods of construction (MMC). In total, 22 modules were precision engineered and constructed at the Portakabin manufacturing facility in York and transported to the site in Rugby. Following extensive groundworks, the building was then craned into position in the space of just four days.

Due to the nature of the procedures being carried out, Portakabin collaborated with a wide-range of expert suppliers to procure and install specialist medical equipment. The modern and spacious facility has additional facilities including three fully equipped procedure rooms, two single sex six-bedded recovery bays, private discharge rooms, separate male and female waiting areas and a large reception area. It also has a floor dedicated to staff with a new fit-for-purpose rest area, office space and changing rooms.

James Pearson, Divisional MD at Portakabin, commented: “We’re thrilled to hand over this new Endoscopy Unit to the Hospital of St Cross. By using modular construction, we’ve been able to provide all the capabilities of a traditional build, with a much shorter programme time, without compromising on quality. We do this by constructing and fitting out almost 70 per cent of the building in our factory in York, while civil works on site in Rugby progressed.”

UHCW Chief Executive Officer, Professor Andy Hardy, said: “This project demonstrated our commitment to investing in the Hospital of St Cross and we were delighted to work with Portakabin on bringing the plans to fruition.

“Easier access to a range of diagnostic services gives patients the best possible chance of earlier diagnosis and successful treatment.

“We are very proud of the new Endoscopy Unit and our staff are enjoying working in spacious, modern facilities.”
