NIHR launches new funding stream to support global health researchers

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) has launched a new global health funding stream to support global health researchers in low and middle income countries (LMICs).

The Global Health Research (GHR) Development Awards will support researchers to develop high-quality proposals for NIHR Global Health Research funding programmes and other funders.

The new GHR Development Awards aim to:

  • Build global health research capacity and capability by supporting LMIC researchers to develop high-quality research proposals
  • Support the development of equitable and sustainable research partnerships
  • Support the development of high-quality, LMIC-led health research proposals which directly target the needs and priorities of people in low and middle income countries

Funding up to £100,000 will be available for projects lasting 12 months. Research projects can be led by researchers based in any country eligible for Official Development Assistance.

Professor Kara Hanson, Programme Director for NIHR’s Global Health Research, said: "The new Global Health Research Development Awards will provide vital support to researchers in low and middle income countries, helping them to develop proposals that will be internationally competitive.

"Shifting the balance towards more LMIC-led applications is a core ambition of the NIHR Global Health Research Programme. We particularly look forward to receiving applications led by early career researchers - these researchers are future global health leaders, and this support will put them in prime position to apply for and receive funding to improve health in countries around the world."

NIHR funds high-quality, applied health research in developing countries that are eligible to receive Official Development Assistance (ODA) from the UK International Development budget. Since 2016, NIHR has funded more than 700 awards in over 60 low and middle income countries, prioritising areas of unmet need.

The launch of the GHR Development Awards forms part of NIHR’s wider commitment to strengthening research capacity in LMICs.

Later this month, applications will open for another new capacity strengthening scheme, the Global Advanced Fellowships. This will support postdoctoral researchers in LMICs and the UK to develop their research expertise and leadership skills. Applications open on 16 April 2024 and you can submit an expression of interest.
