Turning single use face masks into an efficient manufacturing resource

The DENPRO team are working tirelessly to turn the environmental burden of single use face masks into an efficient manufacturing resource. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, over 4 million tonnes of polypropylene PPE waste have been disposed into the environment in an uncontrolled manner, causing significant and long-term ecological damage. DENPRO is committed to helping the NHS to be more sustainable by reducing waste to incineration or landfill.

The team have conducted trials to create a circular supply chain, meaning that sterilised waste mixed with other non-hazardous waste can now be reprocessed to become new products, thus reusing and recycling the materials rather than disposing them.

As a UK manufacturer of FFP3 masks, DENPRO have teamed up with other European countries in a pilot scheme to recycle masks used for fit testing. This R&T trial promotes sustainability and through circular production, results in a reduction of infectious waste going to landfill. The feedback from the HSCNI has been incredibly positive and the next phase to scale up the concept is already underway. Watch this space…
