Getinge’s digital patient flow management solution, INSIGHT, has successfully improved patient flow, reduced staff stress levels, and increased efficiency for a leading orthopaedic hospital in Japan.
Founded in 1989, Funabashi Orthopaedic Hospital has over 100 beds, across three wards, and performs 5,500 surgeries per year. It was the first orthopaedic hospital in Japan to be certified by the Joint Commission International (JCI), which recognises organisations for upholding rigorous standards of quality and patient safety.
In 2019, Funabashi Orthopaedics still relied on a whiteboard for bed management. Bed availability could not be monitored in real-time and, instead, many phone calls were required between staff, across three wards, as well as daily walks to check the bed status of every room. This was the main reason that bed occupancy at Funabashi Orthopaedics hovered around 70% (peaking at 79%), indicating wasted resources and staff struggling to keep up with administrational demands.
Monitoring real-time availability across three wards and 27 consultant rooms without using a digital information system wasted time and energy, but it also made surgery scheduling challenging – especially when the head nurse was out of the office.
