New president for the Royal College of Surgeons of England

The Royal College of Surgeons has appointed Tim Mitchell as its next president. Tim will take office in July 2023, while the College’s current president, Professor Neil Mortensen, will step down in July following a successful three-year term.

Tim is an ENT surgeon from Southampton as well as senior vice president of the College. As vice president, he has led the College’s work on the implementation of the Kennedy review recommendations, membership and regional engagement and learning. Fiona Myint will become senior vice president in July, while two further vice presidents will be appointed over the coming months.

Commenting on Tim's appointment, president-elect Tim Mitchell said: “It is a huge honour to have been elected as the next president of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. It has been a great privilege to work with my fellow vice presidents and council colleagues to support our current president, Professor Neil Mortensen, who has shown outstanding leadership through the difficult times of the pandemic and the beginnings of elective recovery.

"As a College, we will continue to work together to create an atmosphere of inclusion and belonging that our members want and deserve, to support all our members in delivering the best possible surgical care and to provide the leadership that will be needed through the challenging times that lie ahead over the coming months and indeed years.”

Professor Neil Mortensen, current President of RCS England, said: “Congratulations to Tim on his election as the next president of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. I know he will be a great asset to the College’s mission of enabling our members, in all their diversity, to deliver excellence in everything they do. He has been an exemplary vice president, sharing with and supporting me in the many challenges we have faced during the pandemic.

"While there is much work to be done at this difficult time for our patients and the profession, I am confident that the College will continue to grow and change for the better, leading the way and championing excellent surgical care under Tim’s leadership.”
