iM Med Decontamination Academy recently provided some thought-provoking insights into the importance of leadership, team working, training and communication to ensure safe, high-quality decontamination services.
A seminar held by iM Med Decontamination Academy recently welcomed over 100 delegates to the prestigious venue of the Royal College of Physicians. Dr. Helen Griffiths, decontamination lead for the British Society of Gastroenterology and Joint Advisory Group (JAG), chaired the event and commented that there are few educational opportunities such as this, in the NHS, and – after two years blighted by COVID – this was the first face-to-face meeting for many. The day focused on leadership and teamwork, with thoughts, tips, skills and interaction.
The first presentation was by ex-Special Air Service (SAS) officer, Dan Simmons, of Metris Leadership, who spoke on the theme ‘leadership in high-pressure environments’.
“In the SAS, failure is not an option. SAS teams are constantly under pressure,” commented Simmons, inviting comparisons with the healthcare sector. He went on to consider how good leadership can win “hearts and minds”, setting the scene with a thought-provoking insight into the nature of leadership and strategies for dealing with pressure. As decontamination teams support their theatre colleagues in tackling the backlog and face significant pressure to manage increasing throughput, this presentation offered an opportunity to reflect on how decontamination teams can respond to the challenges that this brings and consider how to ensure resilience.
