Leading medical college to discuss innovation beyond COVID-19

A host of world-class speakers will lift the curtain on cutting-edge technologies which have been developed during COVID-19 and how advancements can be made within the surgical profession in a post-pandemic world.

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, which represents surgeons and healthcare professionals from all over the world, is hosting its first global conference in Chennai, which is centred around the theme ‘Beyond COVID-19: Impact & Innovation’ on 6-8 October 2022.

More than 1,500 medical experts are expected to gather and discuss COVID-driven innovations and improvements in the field of surgery and anaesthesia, following the significant challenges and pressures which have been accelerated by the pandemic.

Speakers including RCSEd’s President Professor Mike Griffen OBE, Dr Tony Sparnon, Past President of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, Director General of Health in Malaysia, who will discuss advancements on surgical robots, Artificial Intelligence, 3D printing and other surgical techniques, as well as the ways in which the worldwide community of surgeons can be supported through education.

Mr Pala Rajesh, Vice-President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, said: “After the last two years, we now truly understand the value of in-person meetings, and this will be a fantastic opportunity to come together with others from all over the world to look to the future and discuss the lessons learned from the pandemic as we move forward.

“Surgery is a field that is constantly evolving, so it’s more important than ever to collaborate and share information on some of the advancements that have been made when it comes to research and innovative technologies.

“There will also be important discussions surrounding evolution in surgical teaching, learning and assessment, and how examination standards can be bolstered during the recovery phase of the pandemic. The conference is the perfect forum to do this, while hearing from some of the top professionals who have adapted rapidly to the changing times and challenges brought on by the pandemic.

“The medical profession’s strength is in cooperation and collaboration, and by hosting this kind of event, we hope to spark a brighter future.”

The event follows the College’s successful Triennial Conference, held in Edinburgh earlier this year, where discussions from President Michael Griffin OBE and other delegates centred around the importance of wellbeing within the healthcare workforce.

It is hoped that by bringing together an international audience, individuals will have the chance to share knowledge and expertise on innovative approaches being used in treatments across the globe and learn from other experts within the profession.

This event is expected to prove extremely popular, so it is recommended that those who are interested in attending register their interest and sign up soon.
