Three International Safety Awards for Sodexo

Sodexo’s healthcare teams have won three International Safety Awards from the British Safety Council, receiving the highest result, distinctions.

Distinctions went to Sodexo’s healthcare teams at Central Manchester Hospital, Wythenshawe Hospital and their COVID-19 testing centre sites before their closure in March. They received the awards in recognition of their commitment to keeping their workers and workplaces healthy and safe during the 2021 calendar year.

For six consecutive years, both healthcare teams based at Central Manchester Hospital and Wythenshawe Hospital have been recognised from the British Safety Council for protecting their employees from the risk of injury and ill health at work with world-class health and safety systems and initiatives.

Manchester University Foundation Trust has six hospitals across two locations. Five of which are located at its Oxford Road campus (Manchester Royal Infirmary, Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, and Saint Mary’s Hospital), have also won the British Safety Council health and social care sector award in 2015 and 2020.

Sodexo was one of the largest providers of the Government's COVID-19 testing centres in the UK before their closures, announced in February and March 2022. Around 8,500 worked at these testing millions of people and helping keep infection rates down.

Now in their 64th year, the International Safety Awards recognise and celebrate organisations from around the world, which have demonstrated to the satisfaction of the scheme’s independent judges their commitment to preventing workplace injuries and work-related ill health during the previous calendar year. The awards also acknowledge organisations that have shown commitment to wellbeing and mental health at work.

Philip Leigh, CEO of Sodexo UK & Ireland healthcare, commented: “We are delighted to have won three awards from the British Safety Council for our continued commitment to safety. Our teams are always looking for ways to continually improve our safety performance, so this is a fantastic recognition of the systems and initiatives we have put in place. The health, safety and wellbeing of our colleagues, customers, and all those we serve remain our highest priority.”

Mike Robinson, chief executive of British Safety Council, congratulated Sodexo on their success in winning an International Safety Award 2022 with distinctions: “The British Safety Council applauds Sodexo on their achievement. The awards are in recognition of their commitment and hard work to keep their employees and workplaces free of injury and ill health.

“The vision of British Safety Council is that no-one should be injured or made ill through their work – anywhere in the world. Achieving this requires more than complying with legislation; it means people committed not only to health and safety but also more and more to workplace wellbeing and impelling others to follow suit.”

Sodexo’s healthcare team is also celebrating receiving four gold medals at the 2022 RoSPA safety awards. Royal Stoke University Hospital and Manchester University Foundation Trust’s Oxford Road campus received their eighth consecutive gold medal, and Wythenshawe Hospital received its ninth consecutive gold medal. The COVID-19 test centres which Sodexo operated up until their closure at the end of March 2022 also received a gold medal.

In March, Wythenshawe Hospital successfully retained their PAS3002, a code of practice that supports the physical and psychological health of your workforce.
