Steriliser safety detection system

The NEQIS steriliser safety detection system stops the release of ‘non-sterile’ loads. In the working environments of sterile services departments, it is still possible that an operator can release a non-sterile load in a single door steriliser without it being processed through a validated cycle.

In some instances, non-sterile loads have only been highlighted after some items of a load have been used. This can happen by the operator placing the load within the steriliser and then either being distracted or having to leave  the department. On returning, the operator may open the door and release the load, not realising the steriliser has not been run. In some instances, the error may only be noticed when it is discovered that the tape and indicators have not changed colour and, in some instances, it may not be noticed until the sets arrive in theatre.

However, there is now a safe and effective system ensuring that any load placed into a steriliser has to be processed before the load can be removed. To reduce the risk and install confidence, SSDs can now fit the neQis door interlock system and ensure the steriliser door cannot be opened unless the machine has completed a cycle. It can be installed to any manufacturers’ machine, and features local alarm indicators and a safety override key switch. Ultimately, this system will provide a major step forward towards improving patient safety.
