Trial investigates solution to cut infection rates

Doctors at Barts and The London NHS Trust are continuing to pioneer ways of combating MRSA by testing a new wound change mat that could cut infection rates if successful.

Around 500 prototypes of the mats have been manufactured and are currently being trialled in the Royal London Hospital’s Outpatients Department. Further studies are planned that will compare infection rates between patients where the mat was used and where traditional methods were used.

Consultant plastic surgeon, Graeme Moir, worked with the ErgoMedica company to design the wound change mat. He commented: “MRSA is a problem that every hospital faces and we as clinicians all need to be thinking of ways to reduce its prevalence. In designing MedMat we were looking to make wider use of some of the more practical sterile procedures that are used in surgical theatres. We have a good MRSA record at Barts and The London NHS Trust but we are always looking to make things even safer for our patients.”

The research builds on existing efforts by the Trust to pioneer ways to reduce MRSA rates. Consultant microbiologists at the hospital are already leading a multi-centre trial to see if pyjamas and bed linen with cloth containing silver could clear MRSA from the skin of patients.
