Kate Woodhead RGN DMS provides an insight into an award-winning quality improvement initiative, implemented at the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which significantly reduced the incidence of perioperative hypothermia – a well-known risk factor for surgical site infection.
OneTogether is a group of representatives from professional organisations who have a passion for reducing surgical site infections, which cause such misery to patients. The organisations which founded and continue to support the quality improvement initiative are The Royal College of Nursing, The Infection Prevention Society, The Association for Perioperative Practice, the College of Operating Department Practitioners, 3M company and the Central Sterilising Club.
The group devise infection prevention resources for use in hospital operating rooms to ensure that practice is in line with evidence-based guidance. The resources are freely available on the OneTogether website (www.onetogether.org.uk/resources) There is an annual conference, except in 2020 for reasons of COVID-19, where Awards are given for quality practice development.
