Lack of sunlight may increase the risk of lung cancer according to a report in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.
Researchers found that although smoking accounted for around 75-85% of lung cancer cases, exposure to sunlight and UVB light had an impact. Incidence rates were highest in those countries furthest away from the equator and lowest in those nearest. Higher cloud cover and airbourne aerosol levels were also associated with higher rates of the disease.
The authors also highlighted a study that showed that patients who had surgery in the summer and higher levels of oral vitamin D had the best rates of survival.
