The challenges of FFP2 mask shortages and a temporary solution by LTE Scientific

Due to the unprecedented challenges the health and life science sectors are currently facing with PPE shortages, LTE have been working diligently with their partners to source alternate solutions to help keep staff and patients safe. By working with their Spanish partners Matachana, LTE have announced a method of decontamination which could ease the excessive shortages of FFP2 masks in the UK.

Following a study by The Dutch National Institute for Public Health and Environment (RIVM) it has been established that “in times of scarcity FFP2 masks can be used three times when sterilized twice with hydrogen peroxide in between use.” https://www.rivm.nl/en/documenten/reuse-of-ffp2-masks. The study shows that when cellulose free FFP2 masks are sterilised on a fast cycle at 60oC with hydrogen peroxide they retain their structural and filter integrity to maintain an acceptable level of protection during a fit test for up to two cycles, enabling 3 uses per mask.

LTE can exclusively provide the UK’s health and life science sectors with the Matachana Low Temperature Hydrogen Peroxide sterilizers (HPO Series), which are capable of reprocessing FFP2 masks. The HPO series consists of two models, the 130HPO with a 143-litre capacity, capable of reprocessing up to 20 individually packed masks, and the 50HPO which has a capacity of 52 litres and can reprocess up to 10 individually packed masks. The HPO systems are also ideal for the sterilisation of other medical devices and surgical instruments that are sensitive to high temperatures, including invasive instruments such as those used in endoscopy.

Visit https://www.lte-scientific.co.uk/ffp2-mask-reprocessing/ for more information including a white paper published by Matachana detailing how the HPO series can help with mask reprocessing in these desperate times. LTE Scientific are a leading manufacturer and key supplier to the NHS, PHE and other critical life science sectors. They are committed to remaining fully operational during the Covid-19 crisis to ensure the uninterrupted supply of essential sterilisation, decontamination and thermal products, including the servicing and maintenance of all LTE and non-LTE brands by their nationwide team of engineers and dedicated service centre.
